The Oldest Building, Colombo’s Newest Scene

Nestled in the heart of Colombo Fort, surrounded by the modern towers, lies an architectural time capsule: the Dutch Hospital. Built in the seventeenth century by the Dutch East India Company, this structure is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It has been meticulously restored and repurposed as Colombo’s most charming and high end dining and shopping precinct.

The History and Architecture

The original purpose of the building, constructed between 1681 and 1695, was to serve as a hospital for Dutch officers. Its design is a perfect example of seventeenth century Dutch colonial architecture adapted for the tropical climate. The structure features two large, open courtyards surrounded by five low slung wings, engineered to promote natural ventilation and keep the interiors cool. The restoration carefully preserved the architectural integrity while transforming the interior wards into boutique retail and restaurant spaces.

Dining: From Crab to Cocktails

Today, the Dutch Hospital is primarily famous for its gastronomy, hosting some of Colombo’s most reputable restaurants. The most famous resident of the precinct is internationally renowned for its spectacular crab dishes, drawing foodies from around the world to savor giant Sri Lankan mud crabs prepared with classic pepper, chili, or garlic butter styles. Beyond seafood, the precinct offers a diverse range of international and local cuisines, including Boutique Cafés for high quality Ceylon tea, casual eateries for short eats, and bars which create a lively evening atmosphere.

The small, boutique shops within the precinct specialize in local crafts, high end souvenirs, and elegant jewellery. The Evening Atmosphere in the Dutch Hospital changes dramatically after sunset. The architectural features are softly illuminated, creating a romantic and sophisticated vibe, offering an evening of controlled elegance.

Practical Visiting Tips

The location is easily accessible in Colombo 1 (Fort area). It is best to visit in the early evening (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM) to capture the soft light and secure a table before the dinner rush. Reservations are essential for the famous seafood restaurants on weekends. Attire is smart casual for dinner.
