The Eclectic Marvel of Gangaramaya Temple

The Gangaramaya Temple is arguably the most famous and flamboyant temple in Colombo. Its architecture is a striking fusion of Sri Lankan, Indian, Thai, and Chinese styles, making it feel less like a traditional shrine and more like a vibrant, open air cultural institution. The main shrine houses a massive, serene Buddha statue, while the ceilings are adorned with colourful murals. The temple’s most distinguishing feature is its incredible museum and treasury. This treasure trove houses an astonishingly eclectic collection, including ancient Buddha statues, a vast collection of artifacts, coins, jewellery, and even vintage cars. The Relic Chamber, which enshrines sacred locks of the Buddha's hair, is a profound object of devotion.

Seema Malaka: The Floating Sanctuary

Just a short walk from the main Gangaramaya complex, across Sir James Peiris Mawatha, lies its serene counterpart: the Seema Malaka. This assembly hall for monks is arguably the most picturesque spiritual site in the city. The Seema Malaka stands on three platforms that appear to float on the placid waters of Beira Lake, connected to the mainland by pontoon bridges. The design is the work of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, inspired by the ancient forest monasteries of Anuradhapura. The temple is predominantly used for meditation, reflection, and the ordination of monks, which lends it an atmosphere of extraordinary calm.
